What is Nuclear Medicine?
Preparation:
Preparation for Nuclear Medicine studies vary. Once your specific test is scheduled the scheduler will give you specific prep instructions.
Nuclear Medicine uses the low-level radioactivity emitted by safe, medical isotopes to reveal images of the body and to show abnormalities. Once circulated in the body, these radionuclides accumulate in certain tissues and organs, giving off gamma rays that a special camera can detect to create a picture. This important subspecialty of radiology can add vital information to the imaging of a wide variety of body areas can demonstrate the status of various body functions and can pinpoint problems in tissue or anatomy.
